ウィリアム・ヘイムスの名は、ミュージシャンというよりも日本のポップ＆ロック音楽雑誌の表紙やグラビアを飾る、名だたるロックアーティストをとり続ける写真家として知られている。ロックファンならば、1970年代から現在まで、ボブ・ディラン、ストーンズ、エアロ・スミスからボン・ジョヴィまで、どこかでその作品に触れているだろう。

日本に生まれ育ちアメリカでその地歩を築いてきた彼の、ヒストリーとマインドを伝える写真作品とＣＤのセットの限定盤もおすすめです。

William Hames And The Small Steps

Internationally acclaimed rock photographer William Hames may be less well known as a musician, but "Half And Half" proves that he can sing and play. Hames, born of an American father and Japanese mother, grew up in Japan. After graduating from university in the mid 70s he moved to the West Coast of America and started working as a photographer of major rock bands/musicians. Since then he has been contributing to numerous rock magazines, other music publications and artists' record covers. The musicians he has photographed include Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, CSN&Y, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, Tom Waits and Green Day. Hames recorded a first album independently with his old band in 1974, and 2004's "Half And Half" is the third original work with new band The Small Steps. Including Hames, The Small Steps is an eight-piece band – few of who are professional musicians although several work in the music business. "I had no intention of bringing in technically accomplished musicians for the recording. Instead I wanted to pursue the band's own sound to the best of our abilities," says Hames. The album gives the impression that it is influenced by quality rock and folk music from the band members' generation. A 'deluxe edition' is made up of the CD and a book of his photographs.

【William Hames　プロフィール】
１９７４年の夏。大学と湘南の仲間で、コンサート活動を続けていた中、突然オリジナル曲のレコードを作ろうということになった。鎌倉山の、庭は草ぼうぼう、電気、水道が止まりそうな一軒家に機材を持ち込み、気分はザ・バンドのビッグ・ピンク。実態は原始的だったが、初のLPを完成させた。自主制作の一枚目だ。その直後に、自分ことウィリアムはアメリカに渡り、何時しかロック・カメラマンになっていった。しばらくの間、バンドはお休み状態であったが、１９９０年、９７年とカバー曲中心のCDを２枚制作し、１９９９年にはオリジナル曲では２枚目のCD『19-and-99』を発表。ここまでのグループ名はThe Franken Misty Brothers Band,古き良き時代風のネーミングだった。このころには音楽業界の友人達も参加が多く、２００４年に、バンド名をWilliam Hames And The Small Stepsに改め、スタジオに入って完成したのが『Half And Half』。その後、東京をベースに、ライブ活動を重ね、２００８年にライブCD『Just Go For It Live』を発売。Jeff Satoをfeaturingして、現在、ライブ等で活躍中。
